PHS Staff Spotlight- Ms. Alves

I’d like to thank Ms. Kelly Alves for allowing me to interview her on such short notice.
Ms. Alves is an English teacher here at Parlier High, she’s been teaching at the school for 10 years, she also taught one year in Selma High School. She grew up in Kingsburg, California. The way she came about working here at Parlier High was quite simple, she told me she went to a job fair, saw Parlier had an opening, and decided to apply. She also told me she knew the background of our school, and town. She knew it was something she was looking for in a place to work in. Ms. Alves liked the idea of a small, cozy town and the feelings that come along with them such as being able to see familiar faces around campus.
Ms. Alves decided to go into this particular profession because she truly values educating the whole student. This also translates to being passionate about education, especially education in literacy. To Ms. Alves, this is an invaluable skill that will help in all aspects of life, and she loves the opportunity to instill it into young adults.
Whilst in high school, she herself was more or less 50/50 on the idea of becoming a teacher. She told me that both her parents were teachers, therefore, it was always on her radar- along with other things, such as a becoming a rockstar or a marine biologist. Ultimately, she decided to follow through with the profession during her Senior year of high school.
Outside of teaching, she enjoys hiking, hanging out with her pets, reading, and she also likes to journal. Something that she thinks everyone should know about her is that she likes nature, the outdoors, and animals- especially her pets.
When asked about dislikes however, she expressed that she doesn’t really dislike anything in particular other than really loud noises and surprisingly enough, bananas. In ten years, she says that she thinks she’ll continue to still be a teacher however, she doesn’t know where life will take her, but nevertheless, she is happy for the time being.
Thank you again to Ms. Alves for allowing me this interview. I really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about her history as a teacher as well as a personal insight into her likes and dislikes, I’m sure all her students will appreciate this insightful interview.
