Maritza has lived her whole life in Parlier and has generally enjoyed growing up there. She mentions that there was a point in her life when she got a little bored because there isn’t much for teenagers to do, but overall, she has a positive connection to her hometown. She attended Parlier schools from elementary through high school and has had mostly good experiences throughout her academic journey. One achievement from her earlier years that surprised her was earning a middle school plaque for being among the top five students with the highest grades. Outside of academics, her sister’s graduation had a lasting impact on her, showing her that education can open doors and create opportunities for a better life.
As she progressed into high school, Maritza continued to enjoy her experiences. She appreciated making new friends, trying new activities, and challenging herself academically. These experiences helped her grow as a person, even though she encountered some difficult moments along the way. One high school accomplishment she is particularly proud of is earning valedictorian. She was surprised by this achievement because of the challenging classes and the effort required to maintain top grades. Finding out she was ranked number one in her class made her feel accomplished and proud of the hard work she had put in, even if it sometimes meant making sacrifices in her social life.
Maritza’s achievements have come with their own challenges, including the pressure of maintaining the number one title and navigating how friends sometimes view her as competition. Despite these challenges, she feels that the benefits outweigh the difficulties and remains excited about future opportunities. She follows the quote, “If you fail to prepare, you’re preparing to fail,” which reflects her dedication and mindset toward school and life. Overall, Maritza values her experiences growing up in Parlier, her academic accomplishments, and the lessons she has learned along the way.
