Veterans Day November 10th 2022

The History

Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. It was first held on November 11 1919, it was held to recognize the men who have fought in WW1. Later, after WW2 and the Korean War, it was changed to Veterans Day and was changed to represent all the men and women who served in the military.

The High School Event

This event was the Veterans Day appreciation ceremony for all PHS staff veterans who either served/ were currently serving, or had family who did. There were roughly nine PHS staff members who received recognition, and a certificate of appreciation.
In the morning, leadership students served coffee, hot chocolate, and doughnuts to our veterans and teachers as they made their way into school. Later on in the day during break, the school’s very own marching band performed the national anthem; followed up with a speech from NJROTC’s very own Daniel Torres, who provided a speech with information about what being a Veteran means, and the meaning of what Veterans Day was. After the speech, our own leadership teacher Ms. Carrillo began presenting our PHS Veteran staff with certificates of appreciation for their service to our country.

Student Perspective

The event itself was amazing not only because it allowed students and staff to get to know more about our own veterans on campus, but also because it allowed us to give appreciation and recognition to those who served our country. When staff was called, they were presented with a certificate of appreciation, a tiny American flag, and a round of applause from fellow staff and students on campus.
At the end of the day, we are all very grateful for the blood, sweat, and tears that these men and women have put into all those years in protecting and serving our country.
