PHS Spotlight

Student Spotlight Karina Ramirez

I would firstly like to thank Karina Ramirez for giving me the opportunity and time to interview her. Karina is currently the Color Guard captain at PHS and has been the captain for a few months now. The Color Guard instructors are Mr. Tanaleon (who is also in charge of the band classes) and Ms. Sarah.

When asked what Color Guard is her response was “Color Guard is a visual performing art class in high school where you are able to learn and develop your dancing skills, and also learn stretching”. You have three main objects that you use to perform a flag, rifle, or sabered. Each one brings a different arsenal of tricks and different abilities that you are able to utilize in your performances. They also combine with the band during their marching season and perform there as well as during winter guard.

Currently in color guard the students are learning how to properly and effectively stretch before starting the dancing portion of the class. They are also working on their flexibility. For example Karina said “ I can now do the splits even though I have never been able to do that before.”  They also very recently started learning how to perform with rifles. They are just starting off with basic skill training and then will further move one to more challenging things.

Karina became Color Guard captain because the original captain moved cities due to family related obligations. Mr. Tanaleon had then proceeded to talk to Karina about taking on the role of Color Guard Captain. Karina’s own teammates elected her and showed full support of her taking on this leadership position.
