PHS Spotlight Mr. Flores

An amazing new teacher at Parlier High School this year is Mr. Flores, he teaches Welding and Fabrication.

Mr. Flores was born in Mexico but grew up in Parlier. He graduated from Parlier High School in 2016 and attended the Reedley College’s Welding Program, where he became a certified welder.

I asked Mr. Flores why he wanted to teach and he said the following: “Growing up, I had very few teachers who actually believed in me. I was that student who needed extra help but not everyone could see it or went out of their way to give it to me. I wanted to give back and share my knowledge and experiences with students”.

Mr. Flores knew from an early age that he was a hands-on learner, but not everyone could adapt to that.

When asked how he chose teaching as his career, Mr. Flores shared that he has had his own business since he was 19 and growing up, he never considered teaching. However, as he got older, he developed skills and experiences that opened doors for him. He was fortunate enough to travel and see life outside of the small community that he grew up in. It motivated him to give back and when the opportunity came up to teach, he took it. He started teaching at a different district but his original goal was to teach at Parlier. He wanted to give back to his community and help students who are misunderstood, just like he was.

When asked if there was something he wished he could’ve done better his first time teaching, he said he wishes he would’ve been less nervous his first year of teaching, but he learned from that and now is very excited and comfortable in his profession.

Mr. Flores doesn’t know if he’ll retire as a teacher, but he says he enjoys teaching very much. Some wisdom he wants to pass on to students is: “Learn as much as you can, in any topic you like. Even if you don’t think you’ll ever need it in life.”

A quote he’d like to share to all students is: “Jack of all trades, master of none, but still better than a master of one.”
